One of Hungary’s most beautifully situated citadels was built in the second half of the 12th century on an almost inaccessible mountain peak at an altitude of 552 metres. The reconstructed castle opened its doors in spring 2016: the horseshoe-shaped building complex has a female and a male wing, and while the porch of the female wing overlooks the Renaissance garden, the male wing (the old palace) has a spectacular Knights’ Hall and a Gothic chapel. If you are heading towards the Zemplén Mountains, it is definitely worth climbing the castle hill towards Füzér: there are so many things to experience, from the numerous exhibitions to the magnificent panorama.
