The Castle Run evokes a story from 1558, when the people of Szigliget, who were harvesting at the time, fled to the castle to escape raiding Turks. More than four hundred and fifty years later, people are running through the same countryside for a completely different reason, but the start is still signalled, in keeping with tradition, by a cannon shot. On Saturday, the track is reserved for children’s races over 100, 400 and 700 metres, whilst on Sunday the 1,558-metre, 6.5-kilometre and 10-kilometre races take place. The route takes in the most beautiful parts of Szigliget, including the thatched-roof houses of Ófalu and the hillside, and ends with a steep climb up to the castle. The reward, apart from crossing the finish line, is the panoramic view of Lake Balaton.
