Floating Flow Experience: A sneak peek into the golden rules of SUP

Uzonyi Nóra

If in Hungary we would have wanted to promote SUP (Stand Up Paddle) as “ÁE” (abbreviation for Standing Rowing in Hungarian), probably much less people would be enthusiastic about this unusual sport. Luckily, SUP wasn’t translated, and conquering the waters, it became popular in Hungary. In this article we collect the reasons for which it’s worth getting on the water equipped with a paddle.

Luckily, SUP wasn’t translated, and conquering the waters, it became popular in Hungary. In this article we collect the reasons for which it’s worth getting on the water equipped with a paddle.

The gift of present moment

This is what SUP promises. And not only because balancing on the water our brain is working in “just don’t fall in the water” mode. Although falling in the water – especially in good weather – is not a huge tragedy, the main point in using a SUP is to stay on the surface, and drift on the (preferably) waveless water surface experiencing the feeling of soul-warming delight.

One thing we can promise: while the paddle is in your hands, everyday tasks have no chance of meddling in this experience which reeks of freedom.

Feel free to rent!

Buying your own SUP is only recommended for real fanatics; if we are just getting to know this sport, it is much more simple to rent one, in addition, this way we can set off to conquer the waters on the board most suitable for us.

Due to its panorama, Lake Balaton is a justly popular SUP-destination, but it is important to bear in mind that on the south coast there are more rentals than on the north one. Probably the reason for this is that falling in the knee-deep water is safer.

If we don’t want to try the SUP on the Hungarian sea, no worries: we can choose among many other lakes. For example, if we wander around Lake Tisza, after the active recreation we may reward ourselves with culinary adventures.

The calorie-compensation factor

Officially all of us know that when the good weather arrives it is wise to supplement our diet with fruit and vegetables, however during the summer vacations it often happens that juicy blueberries somehow lose the gastronomical battle against creamy ice creams and beach food.

The good news is that SUP is an excellent sport, since staying on the board requires complex muscular effort. So you don’t have to worry about burning calories, however, you do always need to pay attention to sun protection!

A photo and a bit of exhilarating laughter!

It is almost mandatory to record SUP moments. This is especially true if we don’t sway on the board alone, but we experience the non plus ultra summer feeling with a dog, child, friend or girlfriend!

If we get on water with a bigger group of friends, it is almost inevitable that after a few minutes the great toppling-over operation begins. Luckily, falling in the water from the SUP is a great fun, not to mention that getting back on the board puts our skills to the test every time. If someone in the group records all this – long live waterproof mobile phones! – there is no question that looking at the photos an indelible smile will appear on our faces.

Programmes for SUP lovers

SUP is a popular sport, so it’s not surprising at all that several SUP communities have formed all around Hungary, and there is no shortage of professionally-organised SUP programmes.

Some people only enjoy together the mental and physical refreshment offered by stand up paddling, but it’s possible to go on longer trips as well. Those who are obsessed with yoga on land can try themselves on the water: and when balancing on the board meets the world of asana, that leads to a quite special, we might even say, SUPer form of movement.

Thus, when good weather arrives, it’s worth trying SUP; we can have some wonderful adventures!

Additional tip: Sometimes the wind works against us while paddling: if we don’t want to turn the SUP board by hand after having drifted for a long time (and in some cases pull it back to the starting point by hand), kneel down, and that way it’ll be much easier to navigate.
