Cultural and new-wave gastronomic exploration combined with close-to-nature experiences: here is a full-day adventure in the city of Pécs and the Mecsek landscape. Here is why it’s worth a visit even in the cooler seasons.

Start the day with a hearty brunch!

In Pécs, it is not only in the city centre that you can find exciting, iconic restaurants. The Rokusch is located a little further from the heart of the city, on the Rókus promenade. At one of the favourite gastronomic spots of the gourmets in Pécs, the bagels and sandwiches are filling, you can find a variety of pastries and more classic sweets, as well as seasonal specials. Top it all off with a locally roasted specialty coffee, also available with locally produced plant-based milk. If you would like to enjoy the experience of high quality coffee at home, you can buy CrackerJack Coffee Roastery, coffees roasted in Pécs style in 200 g packs on the spot.

Nostalgia at Patina

If you are interested in electronics and retro technology, then head to 11 Vajda János Street, aka Patina! Here hundreds of devices – some of them still in use – reveal the technology of a bygone age. The pieces of the radio and television exhibition are the private collection of Zsolt Tasnádi, technician of the National Theatre of Pécs, which took shape after more than a decade of collecting and repairing. The iconic devices of the Hungarian consumer electronics industry include Videoton portable TVs, Color Star televisions, Orion radios, but also various record players, speakers and watches. The owner of the collection always has an interesting and unusual story to tell about each object. The exhibition can be visited by appointment only.

A walk in the city centre with a refreshing smoothie in hand

If you are an architecture lover, or simply want to immerse in the urban hustle and bustle, take a short stroll around the city centre. Pécs has a rich historical, cultural and architectural heritage. We can spend some time on the town’s main square, Széchenyi Square, where Baroque buildings surround the Jamia of Pasha Ghazi Qasim and in the background you can see the TV tower on top of the Misina, one of the symbols of Pécs. While you are here, stop by Juice&Co on Jókai Square. The smoothie and fruit juice bar’s repertoire includes a selection of freshly made drink specialities: a blend of tomato, watermelon or banana, blackcurrant and wild blueberry, as well as other smoothies in a variety of flavours. The drink of your choice is also available to take away, so it can be a healthy, refreshing “companion” while you walk.

Excursion in the Mecsek: head to the TV tower!

If you are not afraid of cooler weather and love nature, the Mecsek in winter is not to be missed. The picturesque Mecsek is easily accessible by car or public transport. In addition to numerous hiking trails, the 535-metre-high Misina Peak is also located here, home to the iconic TV Tower, which has been in operation since 1973. Hungary's tallest building houses a panoramic restaurant, an exhibition and a lookout point from which, on a clear day, you can see the Villányi Mountains, the Croatian Papuk Mountain or Badacsony.

Dinner at Hakni

As an evening activity, immerse yourself in the hustle and bustle of the city, but before you close the day, try Hakni’s artisan burgers. Located in the Street of Franciscans, this small but very cosy restaurant is mainly for beef and cheddar cheese lovers. There are basic, standard, deluxe and premium burgers to choose from, with the main difference being the meat patty. If you want to grab a quality burger, be sure to make a reservation first!
