On the last weekend of July in Gyula, about 200 people replay the siege of Gyula's castle in 1566 every year, presenting one of Hungary's most spectacular battle "show" to the public.

Between July 2 and September 2, 1566, an Ottoman army of about 30,000 people surrounded the castle of Gyula, which was protected by no more than roughly 2500 Christian soldiers. The siege, which lasted an unprecedented length in Hungarian military history, was ended by the agreement of the castle captain László Kerecsényi and Pasha Pertev: Although Kerecsényi's act was considered as a betrayal for a long time, history now views it differently. Tribute to the heroes is payed during the three days long Border Fortress Days of Gyula festival, every year.
