On the last weekend of July, about two hundred traditionalists will re-enact the 1566 siege of the castle in Gyula!

In 1566, an Ottoman army of about 30,000 surrounded the Gyula Castle, which was defended by approximately 2-2.5 thousand Christian soldiers. The siege, which was unprecedentedly long in Hungarian military history, was ended by an agreement between the castle captain László Kerecsényi and Pertev Pasha, the brother-in-law of Suleiman I: due to the depletion of the castle's supplies and the outbreak of a dysentery epidemic, the Hungarian commander handed over the castle in exchange for a free withdrawal. Although Kerecsényi's act was considered treason in his time, historical science now views it differently. In addition to the professionals, the memory of the 16th century heroes of Gyula is kept alive in everyday life by the castle and its staff, and on three days a year by the traditionalists of the Gyula Border Days and the ever-increasing number of visitors.
